The effect when a community cares

Granted it was set up as an advertising campaign, but the people in the community had to put forth the effort and above and beyond the advertising the joy on the man's face at the end says it all.

An entire town secretly learned sign language to surprise a hearing-impaired man in Istanbul.

On the day of the surprise, he walks around town and people greet him using sign language. At one point, he asks his sister, “What’s going on?”

At the end of the video, everything is revealed to him. It’s an emotional moment that brings him to tears.

One of the greatest shames in our education system is slowly changing, we are finally beginning to teach multiple languages at an early age. I forget where I was introduced to signing but, I’ve nearly forgotten it now… I used to know some of the word signs & the whole alphabet.

I can be polite & tell people what language I do speak in 9 languages. The basics excuse me, thank you, hello. Where’s the toilet, beer, food? I’m sorry I only speak a little. Farsi is my next project.

I can get my self in trouble in 6 languages (by that I mean I have rudimentary conversation but when I do many presume a greater knowledge then it is “hang on Sloopy” they are off and running)

That’s why the 1st thing I generally learn is how to say I know just a little [language], do you speak English?

I started French in 2nd grade. By 10th I was fluent. Now I remember barely a handful of words and phrases. Also have some Polish from my grandparents but much of that I am losing too. Never did learn to sign though.

Picked up some Russian growing up and increased it during my time in the Navy, took up German in HS got pretty good at it, learned Greek during off campus independant study on Mykonos, then tried to pick up some of the languages where I was stationed (was fairly successful) with Turkish and Japanese.

I would love to know Greek…ancient Greek. So much came from that period.

I saw this and said “I need to do a blog about this!” but you beat me to it. It was a great thing for a community to do.
